English & Dragons - Dice surprise

In the game they're exploring a legendary realm…

In reality, they are learning the English they'll need for the Matura.

English & Dragons is roleplay adventure run entirely in English, in small groups, based in Vienna, led throughout by a native English speaker. Each group works through a full adventure over months. The children create their own characters, decide what happens next, and every session picks up where the last one ended. Their English grows out of the story rather than out of a textbook, and it stays, because every word is attached to something they enjoyed.

No screens. No devices. Paper, dice, maps and faces around a table.

Based in Vienna. Led by John Cox, who trained adults in leadership and public speaking long before he trained children.

Ages 10–16 · small groups · weekly or fortnightly · the first meeting and Session Zero are free

Why it works

A session at this table does at least four things at once: increasing vocabulary, building confidence, promoting teamwork, and more exposure to native English speaking, reading and writing than a month of school.

None of it feels like an English lesson, which is precisely the point.

Meet John

For the last five years John has taught English in Austria, through games, film and theatre, to children aged 6 to 16, in over 50 schools. He also founded Beyond English, which delivers immersive English project weeks to Austrian schools. He prides himself on nurturing the creative imagination of children.

In his previous career, John worked as a senior election organiser at the top level of British politics, writing speeches for parliamentary candidates who went on to be elected. He has trained thousands of young people in England and Austria. Some are now in Government; others in boardrooms and CEO offices.

Public speaking, negotiation and leadership are the things he has spent his working life teaching. Children quickly develop these skills during these sessions, alongside a command of English, in a world of fantasy.

  • "I don't think we should fight them."
  • "So what would you say to convince him?"
  • "I'd tell him we can help, if he lets us through."

“Teaching English this way is so rewarding for everyone involved.”

“I aim for brilliant results, in both English and enjoyment, and it turns out the two arrive together. Children at English & Dragons sessions are invigorated by the story, and that positive energy gets linked with use of English. Over time they gain comfort and confidence, weaving through the puzzles, action and adventure.

We live in a world dominated by screens, but with English & Dragons the children suddenly forget their phones after five minutes. That is because they are having genuine fun, exploring something creative and magical, gaining linguistic skills but also self-esteem, strategic thinking and thinking on their feet, in a safe environment.”

Let's chat!

The best way to start is a message.

We'll arrange an introductory meeting where we talk through what your child would enjoy, agree how the sessions should run, and set the tone together. Then a free Session Zero, where they actually play, and only then do you decide.

I'm available to every family involved, at any point.

You're trusting me with your child for a couple of hours a week, and you should know exactly who they're with. Ask me anything, before we start or at any time afterwards. I'd far rather answer a question than leave you wondering.
